Sony ZV-E10 VS ZV-1: The Comparison

Well, lots of people will be looking for this matchup because Sony ZV-E10 inherits several features of Sony’s VS ZV-1. The ZV-1 was the first camera that Sony manufactured for the vloggers. Even though the ZV-E10 is also produced targeting the same audience, they have several differences.

Camera Type

Even though both are made for shooting videos mostly, Sony ZV-E10 is a mirrorless camera that means you can use different lenses with it. However, the point-and-shoot ZV-1 has a built-in lens which isn’t changeable.

Lens Options

As Sony ZV-E10 is a mirrorless camera, it is compatible with any E-mount lens that Sony produces. It gives you the privilege to choose from a wide range of focal lengths.

On the other hand, being a compact camera, the ZV-1 only has a built-in 24-70mm zoom lens.

Large Sensor

Sony ZV-E10’s APS-C sensor is about 3 times larger than ZV-1’s 1’’ BSI CMOS sensor. The large sensor results in better image quality. Moreover, the big sensor of the latest device renders colors smoothly, reduces noise, and gives you more control of the depth of field.

Body Size

Even though the ZV-E10 is a compact camera, the ZV-1 is smaller and lighter. You can see the figures from the chart above. The ZV-E10 weighs more than the ZV-1 without adding a lens. Once you add a lens to it, the difference will be even more.

Battery Life

Sony ZV-E10 battery is similar to the A6100’s and that is an NP-FW50 battery. It is claimed to have 80 minutes of record time or 440 stills.

On the contrary, Sony ZV-1 battery life isn’t as good as its successor as it uses an NP-BX1 battery which is rated for 45 minutes of record time or 260 stills.

Display Resolution

If you’re a vlogger, you know how much an articular screen helps while recording. Both the cameras have the same 3-inch fully articulation display that seems sturdy.

But the latest one wins over the other having 1.44 million dots as compared to 921.6k dots. However, this isn’t a deal-breaker and most people even won’t notice that.

The touchscreen is most used while shooting videos and snaps. Most of the time you cannot use it to browse the menu and other options. However, you can zoom on the still/video by double-tapping on the screen in playback.

Video Quality

In case of video recording, both the camera offers the same specs and quality. Both the camera can shoot at 4K/30fps with Active SteadyShot digital IS. Also, Full HD videos can be recorded up to 100fps that too can reach up to 120fps if selecting Sony’s S&Q mode.

However, ZV-E10’s larger sensor should generate a bit better image quality than the other.

For still images, the ZV-E10 offers up to 11fps continuous shooting capability, while. ZV-1 has 24fps of continuous shooting capability. ZV-E10 also can snap up to 116 JPEGs at a time.

Autofocus

Autofocus spec is also the same for both the Sony cameras, except the ZV-E10 has a combined coverage of 84% whereas ZV-1 has 65%. Both the cameras can track the subjects once focused, but Jaren Polin wasn’t quite satisfied with the performance in his video.

The two budget cameras support the face and eye detection of humans and pets. AF performance should be the same for the cameras.

Product Showcase Mode

Sony uses its product showcase mode that automatically changes focus from a subject to an object in front of the lens. It was first introduced in the ZV-1 and people found it very handy.

When the mode is switched on, the camera prioritizes nearer objects. It is a smooth way to shift focus from your subject to the product. Both the ZV-E10 and the ZV-1 have this product showcasing mode.

Background Defocus Feature

Both the Sony ZV-E10 and Sony ZV-1 include background defocus buttons to blur backgrounds easily. The background defocus switch sets the aperture of the lens to its height number to separate the subject from the background.

Webcam

You can use the Sony ZV-E10 as a video and audio webcam directly as it supports UVC/UAC connections. You don’t need to look for additional software for that.

You can also use it for live streaming through a USB cable to a PC or Sony smartphones. Unfortunately, the ZV-1 doesn’t come with a USB Type-C to be used as a webcam.

Which One to Choose?

If you’re in a dilemma to choose between the ZV-E10 and ZV-1, the first thing you should consider is whether you want a mirrorless or point-and-shoot camera. The ZV-E10, being a mirrorless camera lets you choose different lenses as you need and hence, allows versatility.

Again, Sony ZV-E10 has a large sensor that results in improved image quality.

On the other hand, Sony ZV-1 is a compact and all-in-one camera solution for vloggers who want a pocket-sized device and don’t want to deal with several lenses.

Sony ZV-E10 Release Date

Sony ZV-E10 is expected to release by the end of August 2021. It would cost you about $800 with a 16-50mm kit lens from B&H Photo which comes in between the ZV-1 and the A6100.

The Verdict

Being honest, both the Sony ZV-E10 and ZV-1 are budget-friendly, entry-level cameras that are specially designed for vloggers. That is the reason why both of them have amazing video recording features. However, if you compare them with high-end devices, then you’re still living in a fool’s paradise.

If you’re a vlogger, chances are you already know about the ZV-1 and have come here to know if you should upgrade to this new device or not.
