Landscape Duel – Before/After
This week’s photo duel at ImprovePhotography.com is Landscape. Which landscape can be a lot of fun – but it takes a certain amount of creativity in between Winter and Spring. I have never heard anyone say how much they love this time of year… but here are some before/after shots that I took for this week. They required a lot of Photoshop because I didn’t want to cop out do a black/white photo. As you look at these photos – It is my hope that you can come to appreciate not only the photographic talent but the artistic side of taking a photo like this and turning...

I took my old roommate, Brian Bell, out with me to do some night photography a couple of weeks ago! He is just a good sport when it comes to the patience you need for some of this… but as we were trying to do some long exposures, I remembered that I had a big spotlight in my trunk and resolved to do some light painting of the river and boat dock there. I think this turned out pretty cool… and Brian thought so too. As a matter of fact, he loved it so much that he has been telling everyone that he took it. It’s Brian’s Photo. Here’s to my Professional Light Painter...

What do you do when you have full moon and access to a “Middle Of Nowhere” Cabin? You do a little night photography! We were hopeful we wouldn’t have many clouds going on in the sky – but we did. We actually got snowed on!! So, while we were waiting for the sky to clear up, we did a little tabletop light painting with some objects we could find. Once the moon was showing, we took some long exposures (about 2-3 minutes)! The one with the star trails was a 20 minute exposure but with the full moon out, everything started looking as if it were daylight. Thanks to Rebecca...

Thanksgiving Point Tulip Festival Prime weekend at the Thanksgiving Point Tulip Festival! Took a fairly random trip down to Utah with several friend photographers to take photos of all the pretty flowers! The Thanksgiving Point gardens is a very beautiful place and if you could get everyone out of there – you would have some amazing shots to share of that place. But, because so many people were around, I focused on taking some creative macro shots with my external flash. I have taken a lot of photos of flowers and I just knew that things had to get interesting to make this trip worth...
Read MoreThe Sandy Dunes
The other night I went out to try some long exposure on the sand dunes with a combination of light painting. The only problem was that the starry sky was crowded out by the clouds that came in very quickly! I was a little disappointed at what was going on until I saw this shot! The semi-full moon lit the sky for us that night leaving a very cool effect in the clouds. Also, the city lights reflecting up into the clouds as well added a nice touch as well to the photo! What do you think? The only editing that took place was mostly done in CameraRaw for the adjustment brush so I could fix the...
Read MoreMy First AMAZING Star Trails
I tried star trails for the first time and I think it turned out pretty well! In an hour and half, I was able to take 3 shots and not to mention that my battery died half way through the second one. Luckily I had a second set to switch but then it became too late to stay out too much longer but it was fun! Just need a good movie to keep you interested for that long while you wait. 40 minute Exposure f/8 ISO...

I’m working on a Photo Journal project and this is one of the photos that I took. This is a HDR using Nik Software HDR Efex Pro. I really like the capabilities of the software and the fine tuning I can do. Once it was finished processes in HDR Efex, I did some finish effects with Color Efex Pro 4 and then in Photoshop, Levels and Sharpening. I think it turned out a lot better than I had anticipated, but the storm clouds is what really makes this photo interesting.
