Farewell Bannack

My sixth visit to Bannack Ghost Town was something to remember. It was also my last visit for a while.Every time I go, I try to focus on something new and different. This time it was portraits and it was my goal to help the students better understand how lighting and off-camera flash works when taking portraits. While these aren’t the best portraits you have seen – but they are some of my favorites! Tell me what you think! ...

Bannack Ghost Town – Volume 5

Winter 2012 was my 5th time to Bannack Ghost Town in Montana! We had just a mild winter up here in the north that there was no room to complain for such a wonderful day in February! Seriously! The whole time we were there I just keep thinking of what it was like last year and how miserable it was from the freezing winds to the random blizzards. But, even though it is cold outside, I always seem to get some of my best work during the winter time! Take a look around and let me know what you think!

Bannack Candid – Winter 2012

Another trip to Bannack Ghost Town with a smaller group of students this time around! With such a mild winter… small crowds… you couldn’t ask for anything more! These candid shots came from when we have everyone gathered around for the town tour with our guide, Tom. But, while we were there – we setup several “portrait” stations for the students to practice their Portrait photography with Studio Lights, Natural Light, Window Light, Speed Lights with a Shoot-through umbrella and a 7′ parabolic umbrella. What a great day! Here are some of the shots! I...

Bannack Top 10 • Spring 2011

Top 10 Photos for Bannack Ghost Town Panoramas I have been on this kick lately with Panoramas. I love how the first panorama turned out! I think there are about 10 images in there and almost completely processed in CameraRaw to give it the HDR like effect on it. Both were treated the same way. HDR – Photomatix I am demo-ing some new HDR software called Photomatix to see if it’s something I’m interested in. So far, I have been fairly impressed with the results and best of all, it works better on my Mac. CameraRaw + Photoshop There was a lot of editing that went...

Bannack Candids – Spring 2011

These are students from the Digital Imaging classes at BYU-Idaho. We had about 60 people here in the State Park on 25 May 2011. It was as if the town had come to life again. No pun intended. Below are some quick shots that I took. The only editing done was some sharpening and levels. Let me know what you think...

Poster: 36″x24″ Before | Original After | Edited Full Bar | Waiting for the “after life” party.22 February 2011 • 2:20 pm | Bannack, MTCanon Rebel T1i | 50MM | F/ 2.8 – 1/50 | ISO: 200 | EV: -2I had this idea to take a panorama of the bar in the saloon and do an HDR effect on it. At first I had taken three different exposures for each shot but it just wasn’t coming together for me. Coming the shots made the final image look really blurry. So, I decided to just blend the darker images together and use Camera Raw to achieve the effect I wanted. In all...

Merry Go Round! | Action Blur21 May 2010 • 4:21 pm | Bannack Ghost Town, MontanaCanon Rebel XS | 28MM | F/ 22.0 – 1/20 | ISO: 800 | EV: 0My great associate and friend, James Rognon, helped with with camera settings on this one. If you want a blurry picture in broad daylight, set your F/Stop as high as it’ll go and take your picture. Anything moving will look blurry which is what I wanted with this merry go round. I’ve decided to go with this picture because many people took ghost shots and will most likely use them. Editing:I did camera raw processing to boost colors....

Flat Tire. | Reverse One21 May 2010 • 1:43 pm | Bannack Ghost Town, MontanaCanon Rebel XS | 59MM | F/ 8.0 – 1/200 | ISO: 200 | EV: -0.67I couldn’t think of any other picture to take and have it look good. I wanted something that was obvious of what I was trying to do. I think this picture achieved that effect. This was the same wagon wheel that I did my HDR picture with. Editing:I used the “boost” action in photoshop. Added blacks in camera raw and added a slight vignette. Almost there! | Reverse Two21 May 2010 • 1:42 pm | Bannack Ghost Town, MontanaCanon Rebel...

Cracked Wheel | Macros Combined.21 May 2010 • 3:59 pm | Bannack Ghost Town, MontanaPhotoshop CS5 | iMACI took these macro shots at Bannack Ghost Town. I loved how these two combined together because of the cracked and corroded effect it gave to the picture. I thought it was very fitting given the broken wagon wheel in the middle of a ghost town.Editing:I used photoshop to bring this creation together. I selected the green layer channel of the texture rocks and overlaid them with Overlay blending mode. I then blurred the wheel enough to give it a painted look and not so sharp. Macro Wagon...
